How to remove the blacklist and re-enable your Directory Opus

========================================================
what is DIRECTORY OPUS
========================================================

Directory Opus is an alternative windows explorer. if you find windows explorer not as customisable as you would like it, or found windows explorer crashes too often, or whatever other reason you want to dump windows explorer, first alternative you should consider is Directory Opus. trust me this is a very good piece of app. it totally replace windows explorer. it even remap the hot key Win+E!

below is the the features that i like about directory opus
========================================================
QUOTE
========================================================
Designed for Windows: Directory Opus 9 has been designed and written from the ground up especially for Windows. Full support for the latest Windows Operating Systems from 2000, XP and 2003 and Windows Vista.

Familiar Interface: Unlike many other file managers, Directory Opus defaults to an Explorer-compatible user interface. You can immediately begin using Directory Opus, with no learning curve, because it will feel extremely familiar and comfortable to you. But, you will find that you can easily configure the interface to fully personalize your system including the use of dual file displays or multiple displays for special folders.

Fully Configurable Menus, Toolbars and Hotkeys: Directory Opus supports unlimited menus and toolbars. Toolbars can be attached to any side of a Lister display or can be independent free-floating windows. Directory Opus supports user-configurable hotkeys, both for use within Opus, and globally throughout the system. The Windows key is also fully supported!

True Multitasking: The object-orientated multi-threaded design gives you unheralded power to perform multiple operations at the same time. Why should you have to wait for your computer to finish? Now you can begin one task and immediately move on the the next. Zip one folder whilst unzipping into another, at the same time as you are downloading files from a remote FTP site and copying yet more files between your local folders, independently and reliably.

Built-in Viewer Pane: Quickly view pictures, text files and other types of files in the Opus Viewer pane directly in the Lister window. Opus supports a viewer plug-in system so you can add new drivers for the specific file formats you wish to view as they become available. Directory Opus comes with plug-ins for many popular image and document file formats. Third party libraries can extend the viewing capabilities to include Word and Excel documents, Acrobat files and many other types of files. A free SDK is available for developers to write their own viewer plug-ins.

========================================================
UNQUOTE
========================================================

the built in viewer is exceptionally good. it is fast and, most importantly, it opens files with unicode filename! yeah i have found no other program that opens image with unicode filename except directory opus (well, windows picture and fax viewer doesn't really count as it lacks zero customisation capability)

========================================================
directory open BLACKLIST issue
========================================================

if you installed Directory Opus and by mistake updated or allowed it to auto update, and subsequently have Directory Opus blacklisted, this is how to get it working again without reinstalling windows

below is direct copy from the above link. many thanks to weicker for sharing this method with us

========================================================
QUOTE
========================================================

The following text was written by jjkarrington working with some stuff that I initially found out. It's applicable for an older version of Dopus but the same "theme" holds true here - the same hidden registry key and file concept. Work with this and see if you can unblacklist yourself.
---
PRELIMINARY DRAFT:

Caution: You are advised to backup your registry (and perhaps even your computer) before proceeding. In other words, proceed at your own risk.

Directory Opus 9.1.0.2893 YAG (dopus aka dopus 9.1) uses a licensing scheme based on certificates. YAG provided the "thomalla" certificate that unlocks dopus. The problem is that eventually the thomalla certificate is blacklisted by dopus. Dopus stores the blacklist certificates in multiple registry branches and in multiple file locations. You can uninstall dopus and reinstall but the certificate will still be blacklisted because the blacklist information is not deleted.

What follows is not a minimal set of instructions but rather the steps we used to get dopus working again with the thomalla certificate. Simply put, its just happened to be the way that worked for us.

Although we did this by installing dopus 9.0.0.4, applying the thomalla certificate, and then upgrading to dopus 9.1.0.2893 (YAG), we don't see why these instructions won't work with 9.1.0.2893 directly. The 9.0.0.4 release was just a convenient starting point for troubleshooting the issue.

Step 1: prevent dopus from contacting home to obtain the blacklist. Step 1 is a must even if you have a working certificate or have never installed dopus before.

1a. Either create your own firewall rules or do what we did and add the following to your windows host file:

file: %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

127.0.0.1 gpsoftware.com.au
127.0.0.1 www.gpsoftware.com.au

1b. reboot

1c. test - ping both gpsoftware.com.au and www.gpsoftware.com.au and make sure the reply is from 127.0.0.1.

Step 2. Uninstall Dopus, reboot. Step 2 and what follows are for those whose thomalla certificate has been blacklisted.

Step 3: Optional: clean the registry of all non-trivial references to "gpsoftware" and "dopus". Personally, I don't think this step is necessary but I did it anyway.

Step 4. Remove the black list from the registry

4a. For each of the registry keys below, delete any values and subkeys but do not delete the keys themselves:

The registry keys are:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International\Time
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Clock
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\File Manager\Settings
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket\TrashInfo\
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\DlgInfo\

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\AppDataBucket\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DesktopInterfaceMethod\

Example:

For this branch

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\DlgInfo

you will see subkeys like this

{93E77B44-276F-4A71-B9AA-F2CF4E99B7B3}
{5E2948B7-58F8-426D-B0CF-8221822BC084}
...

Blow the subkeys away but leave the branch intact (it will be empty when you are done). If the branch is already empty, then fine, go to the next.

4b. Search for the following value: {CBE4B0D2-C4FC-45E3-976C-7D2E951DD34B} and delete the key. If you have followed the steps above, you should not find this but just in case.

Step 5. Remove blacklist files:

5a. Delete the contents of C:\windows\system32\inf32 but leave the inf32 directory (it will
be empty when you are done).

5b. delete the following files. If the file is not found, go to the next one.

del /Q /A "%programfiles%\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\dopus.dat"
del /Q /A "%appdata%\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\dopus.dat"
del /Q /A %windir%\xpcc37.log
del /Q /A %windir%\system32\argtmp39.dll
del /Q /A %windir%\system32\inf32\*

attrib "%Systemroot%\..\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\dopus.cert" -s -h -r
del /Q /A "%Systemroot%\..\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GPSoftware\Directory Opus\dopus.cert"

NOTE: don't make my mistake - I went to the dos prompt and looked for the files and did not find them. Some are hidden at the dos prompt. The thomalla certificate was not accepted until the files were deleted.

6. Install dopus 9.1 YAG and see if the thomalla certificate is accepted.

NOTE: as stated we installed 9.0.0.4 first and then upgraded to 9.1. However, installing 9.1 and bypassing 9.0.0.4 in step 6 should work.

Nintendo dual screen (NDS) study

This is information that I gathered on NDS so far. Please let me know if anything is not 100% correct. I can be contacted via "chris in taipei at g mail dot com" no space

1. Too basic to find, but so basic that you should know:
There are 3 DS consoles, namely Nintendo DS (aka NDS, the ugly kid), Nintendo DS Lite (aka NDSL, the one that is available everywhere), and Nintendo DSi (aka NDSi, the latest one)

  • 1.1 Charger for NDS, NDSL and NDSi are all imcompatible. They usually come in either 110v or 22ov (not 100v to 240v). A 100v to 240v charger in Taiwan's auction site costs around USD 2.5 for NDSL, to USD 5 for NDSi. Charging via USB cable is slower than adaptor, can may not charge as full, but it is the most compatible/convenient. USB cable is around USD 2, same price for NDSL and NDSi
  • 1.2 Games all seem to be compatible
  • 1.3 Hacking cards may not be compatible. So far I know AK2i works on NDSi and NDSL. R4i works on NDSi but I am not sure if it works on NDSL. Please note AK2i has language issue on NDSi. More info on that here
  • 1.4 All NDSL and NDSi, the console interface language can change to English even if by default is in Korean (mine is...) or else. Console interface language, hacking cards interface language and game's language all don't seem to be linked i.e. you can have a Korean NDSL running a Chinese interface hacking card while playing games in English
  • 1.5 NDSL and NDSi use lithium ion battery i.e. no need to purposely run the battery flat then recharge
  • 1.6 In terms of convenience, best charging method is to use USB cable like this one here. Note NDSL and NDSi uses different cable (head is different)
  • 1.7 GBA and NDS charger are compatible
  • 1.8 NDSL/NDSi consoles are not like DVD, they don't have region restriction. Units only differ in terms of bundled charger voltage and default interface language (can always change back to English). The same applies to game, but most games you cannot change its language
  • 1.9 For example, Mario Kart DS is available in both English and Japanese, you cannot mix the 2 to play multiplayer games. The game in both console must be in the same language. But there is a work around :)

2. Information to read before buying your first NDSL and NDSi hacking cards (aka Nintendo DS storage devices, it is used to play illegal downloadable games as per below)

My wife bought a metallic pink NDSL together with R4 SDHC, it reads 4GB SD fine, presummabilly it'd read 8GB fine also. My NDSL battery is flat and without a correct voltage charger with me... Will try the 8GB once battery is charged up

For NDSL, the most popular card is the R4DS. This leads to make fakes... And R4DS does not support SDHC (max 2GB SD). DSTT supports SDHC but also plagued with fakes. The most powerful is the CycloDS Evolution which also makes it the most expensive

If you are in to buy a NDSL like me, my recommendation at this point, is the AceKard 2i (aka ak2i) as this works for both NDSL and NDSi. Please note I do not own ak2i card nor NDSi, this recommendation is based on my reading so far

3. Emulators to play on PC

Since my battery is flat and without charger, I thought perhaps one can play it on PC instead. This is my finding:
Places to find emulators for NDS
http://www.ndsemulator.com/
http://www.emulator-zone.com/
http://nocash.emubase.de/

And you'd need a joystick/game pad for PC to better mimic the NDS control. This Logitech game pad is very inexpensive and the layout "looks" pretty similar to NDS

5. Recommended games to play on

Now you need the games to play it and here you go :)

5A. A short list of best selling Nintendo DS games (torrent downloading directly from isohunt):

5B. Sites where you can find NDS news, and games to download:
isohunt.com -> need I say more? Anything and everything is here...

Nokia smart phones saving email onto SD to free up internal memory

Taken from here

The original post was for Nokia E61. I tried on my colleague's E71 and it worked the same

Follow these steps...

  1. Go into the messaging application.

  2. Go into options and then settings.

  3. Go to the "Other" option in this menu.

  4. Scroll down to "Memory in use".

  5. Change it to memory card.

  6. Icon for messaging should now show either an envelope with a small memory card over it, or just a memory card.

  7. Your messages are now being stored on the memory card.

Note that the phone may or may not ask you whether you wish to copy over existing messages in the phone memory to the memory card. I find it helps to delete all the messages in the phone memory before you start this process (Don't forget outbox and sent as well)

next hard drive capacity limitation to watch out

once drives larger than 2.2TB rolls out, we will start to have problem seeing 100% of the capacity

Below is direct quote from here:
While it is true that the ATA/ATAPI-6 standard defines a method to provide a total capacity for a device of 144 petabytes, the next limit will be imposed not by the ATA devices but by many of the popular operating systems in use today. This limit will be at 2.2 terabytes (2,200 gigabytes). This barrier exists because many of today's operating systems are based on 32-bit addressing. These operating systems include many flavors of Linux, Mac OS 9.x, and Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4, 2000, and XP (Windows XP/64-bit also has the limit because of leveraged 32-bit code).

how to set a strong password

Let me make it short, it's really easy...

If you like me who sometimes use traditional Chinese and uses alternative input method such as 注音輸入, you can "encrypt" your password in Chinese. Ha you don't get it, right? For example:

you are a stupid ass = 你是笨蛋 in traditional Chinese

if you type 你是笨蛋 using 倉頡 in English keyboard layout, you type it as "onfyymrhdmnolmi"

Now that is more difficult to be hacked :)

Yeah I know this isn't perfect as it doesn't do mix cases and numbers, but hey it's better than your original password, and it doesn't take you efford to learn a new trick

Something for nothing

entry level PC with good performance would cost how much at Q2 2009?

according to this analysis, entry level PC with good performance would cost under TWD 12500 (he reckons TWD 12250 would do it). that's excluding casing, monitor, optical drive and power supply

yet the spec is pretty decent!

furthermore, many people would have got an old display card, twin display (yeah i am thinking KVM, or VNC approach), more than one hard drive, and no need of optical drive in the second PC. the total then comes to TWD 7500 excluding casing and power supply

that's freaking affordable. you could have run linux on it and using it as a high-end router with bandwidth control, or NAS, or as a media centre next to your PC. that'd make it only TWD 3500 more than "western digital HD TV media player (TWD 4000)"

think about that...

AutoHotkey

AutoHotkey (ahk) is a very powerful scripting utility

only down side is the learning curve to start coding

below code is taken from here. it remap you external keyboard's numberpad so that, regardless of numlock on/off, the numberpad is always number

=======quote========
NumpadIns::Numpad0
NumpadEnd::Numpad1
NumpadDown::Numpad2
NumpadPgDn::Numpad3
NumpadLeft::Numpad4
NumpadClear::Numpad5
NumpadRight::Numpad6
NumpadHome::Numpad7
NumpadUp::Numpad8
NumpadPgUp::Numpad9
NumpadDel::NumpadDot
======unquote=======

and to start using ahk, you would have these added
=======quote========
#z::Run "D:\profile\chris\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Google Chrome.lnk"

^!n::
IfWinExist Untitled - Notepad
WinActivate
else
Run notepad
return

^!c::
IfWinExist Calculator
WinActivate
else
Run calc
return

#c::Run cmd
======unquote=======

with the above implemented, we are yet to learn the scripting language and already we are off the mark with some big boost

DC says kimi is lazy

yeah DC said it before the malaysian GP qualifying session on BBC that kimi is lazy and talented. very surprised such comment would come out so directly

googled and found this isn't the first time DC said this, DC also told daily star so

by the way, DC says cockpit is 60 degress in malaysian GP...

seagate barracuda 7200.12

7200.12 is 500GB per platter, so it's deemed to be faster than 7200.11's 375GB

only problem, as of 10 april 2009, is that it only goes up to 1TB. 1.5TB is still not available yet. i wonder if they are going to release 2TB version (i would guess so)

need to buy a new hard drive at end of april. hope the new 1.5TB would be out by then

i actually want to buy external hard drive (the seagate free agent desk drives), and this makes it difficult to know if the external drive contains a 11 or 12 generation drive inside...

here is a review that i pulled off the net.

======

yeah i am aware of the firmware bug issue, but i only realised after i posted above that how serious the bugs are (also it is affecting almost all of the hard drives), and what actions seagate is taking to sort it out

any one can make mistake. the key is not to make no mistake (unless you are inhuman...) but how you look at it, what action you take to resolve it and what you learn from it

i got to say, i am very disappointed. busy checking what options i have with WD and hitachi...

===

going for western digital's 1.5TB drive (2TB is way too expensive)

2TB review here

the last major recall by wester digital seems to be 1999/2000 (searched on google with keyword "western digital recall", it comes up with 1999 recall also). looks like western digital is a much safer bet

top gear S13 starting date

S13 would start at one of two sundays at end of june 2009, which is 21 jun else 28 jun 2009

looking forward to it as usual :)

number of prisoners in america

just read below from economist magazine. this is a great magazine by the way

shocking figure. however these figures do not give you the actual picture (you need to read on here), but it is really interesting (sad?) to learn that one third of black american has been locked up some point in their live

===

America has less than 5% of the world’s people but almost 25% of its prisoners. It imprisons 756 people per 100,000 residents, a rate nearly five times the world average. About one in every 31 adults is either in prison or on parole. Black men have a one-in-three chance of being imprisoned at some point in their lives. “A Leviathan unmatched in human history”, is how Glenn Loury, professor of social studies at Brown University, characterises America’s prison system.

Schumacher vs Hakkinen by Brundle

i am here to save one of the greatest articles! it virtually ceased to exist on the internet by now, it's not even on ITV's website where it originated from. i managed to find it now because about 5 or so years ago (that'd be around 2004) i also tried to look for it, somehow found it on atlasf1 which, as you know, has been bought out by autosports in 2005

guess it's only possible to find something if you know where to pinch it :p

now i'd be keeping it here forever :)

================================================================

Schuey v Mika
By Martin Brundle

ITV-F1's Martin Brundle is a remarkable man. Once a top-line Formula 1 driver, he is now televised sport's most expert 'expert'. He has also been a team-mate in F1 to both Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. Never before has he rolled out the anecdotes, compared and contrasted the two men's characters, spilled the beans. Until now. Who better to deliver final judgement?

Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen are the two men to beat in Formula 1 today. But you don't need me to tell you that their records speak for themselves. Conventional wisdom says that Michael is number one, Mika number two. But, like everything in F1, it's not as simple as that.
I know both men pretty well. I was Michael's team-mate at Benetton in 1992, and Mika's at McLaren in '94. And, as a commentator for ITV Sport, it's been my job to analyse and interview them from a journalistic perspective for the past four years.

So who's better, in my view? Well, it's a close call. Michael is unbelievably confident, -always was. I remember one particular debrief in '92. Tom Walkinshaw, Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne and myself had all agreed on a certain strategy - whereupon Michael, in his first full season of F1, said, "No, I don't agree." It wasn't an arcane point, but Michael was demonstrably wrong. It was almost comical, in fact. But what I found remarkable was that he was prepared to argue against all that experience. That really impressed me. And, even better, once his argument had been laboriously dismantled, he had the good grace to say, "Sorry. You were right. I was wrong."

He's a nice man off the track, but he has always been ruthless on it. He tried to have me off the track several times in '92. But, again, one day in '95, when he was still at Benetton and I'd moved to Ligier, over dinner he said, "I now realise how wrong it was to fight my team-mate like that back in '92." So he's not the arrogant and aloof champion people make him out to be.

He was always a thinker though, even in the early days. I remember Spa '92, when we were running nose to tail in the rain, him ahead. As we came through Raidillon I felt a lot of grip, and I thought, "I'm coming in for slicks." A few corners later, at Pouhon, I felt it again, and I thought, "Yes, this lap." Then Michael went off the road at Stavelot, gathered it up on the wet grass, just missing the barrier - I'll never know how - and I thought, "Maybe there's not so much grip. I'll do one more lap." I was aware that Thierry Boutsen had already taken slicks and had immediately crashed heavily. Anyway, the pitstop entry was after the Bus Stop in those days, and Michael was right on my tail - really on it as we braked for that challenging chicane. And yet what he was doing was checking out my rear tyres! You see, it's hard to examine your own, because on the straights you just see a blur; and in the corners you don't really want to be spending too much time looking in your mirrors. You're kind of busy with the view ahead. And that was a clever thing of Michael to do, in the heat of the moment, having just gone off at a fast corner, at Spa, in the wet. Remarkable.

Of course, Michael saw the damage on my tyres and decided to take the slicks that I suppose I should have had. And he won the race. It's those pivotal moments that make the difference between being good and being great. I think that story shows the mental capacity he had -even then, in his first full F1 season -to drive an F1 car on the ragged edge and at the same time think analytically about what was going on around him.

Mika is a very different animal. I didn't have a great relationship with him in '94. It was a difficult time for McLaren. Ayrton Senna had left to join Williams, then he died and the team, McLaren, were to grief-stricken. In their eyes I wasn't Ayrton - and nor was Mika. The Peugeot engines were unreliable, and the car wasn't top-drawer.

So Mika and I were under strain. We didn't get on that well and a lot of it was my fault, I now admit. I was new to the team while Mika had been there a year already, and I was on the back foot a lot of the time, having signed for the drive just 72 hours before first practice for the first race.

I like to think I've got a good relationship with Mika now, but he will never be as chatty as Michael. Michael likes a good long talk. -I once chewed the fat with him for three hours solid on a long flight. Not Mika. On the face of it, he's quite taciturn. But that's only half the story. There are two Mika Hakkinens, you see. There's the press conference Mika - the taciturn one - and the private Mika.
And the private Mika is a bit of a party animal, to be honest. People who don't know him sometimes think he's thick, but he's far from thick. He's a quiet thinker. He's highly intelligent, in fact - you don't win two world drivers' championships without being extremely bright. But, more than that, he's streetwise. Michael is a far more readable book.

Mika minimises extraneous mental clutter. In '94 I remember going with him to the circuit from the airport, somewhere or other, and he was driving. As we approached each slip road, he would automatically take it. And I'd shout, "No, no, Mika. Not this way." And he'd cruise back on to the motorway. And it would be the same at the next junction. I gradually realised that he didn't really want to learn the way. I'd always travel with pre-packed maps and directions -a grand prix dossier, if you like- because I'm that type of person. But Mika didn't want his mind to be encumbered by that kind of trivia. Similarly, Mika has managed to avoid the level of superstardom that Michael has to cope with. Is that accidental, or is it that he shuns the limelight for strategic reasons?

One thing's for sure: Mika isn't about to tell anyone the answer to that question.

So much for their characters, but what of their in-cockpit approaches? Well, their driving styles are similar. They both drive the car slightly 'loose'. They can both live with a car that's moving around at the back - Michael more so than Mika. Michael is very acrobatic. So many F1 cars tend to move progressively towards oversteer during the life of the tyres, yet Michael can live with that happily.
And I think it's that ability to improvise in an attacking way - to adapt to changing grip levels and variable 'feel' - that makes him so strong in a race. Michael can operate very close to a constantly-changing limit while that mutation is occurring. As a result, in the wet -or, more specifically, in inconsistent drizzle he's unbeatable.

Mika is good in the rain, but Michael is in another league. He's also supremely good at reading a race. Better than anyone else, he can take on board what he's being told over the radio, and respond accordingly on the track. Ferrari have won a lot of races that way. Michael can turn up the wick where Mika sometimes doesn't seem able to.

But, perhaps counter-intuitively, when the chips are down in a crunch race I'd put my money on Mika. We've seen that a few times now -Nürburgring '98 and Suzuka '99 spring to mind. Historically, when it's man against man, Mika is more likely to deliver the perfect race under pressure than Michael is. And the reason is that Michael is more liable to overdrive in those circumstances.

In extremis, Mika makes fewer mistakes. As a team-mate, you tend to focus on your opposite number's performance in the 'hero' corners -ultra-fast places like Eau Rouge, 130R and so on -and there's no doubt that both men were extremely brave at places like that. They still are. But of the two of them it was Mika who really caught my attention in the white-knuckle, hold-your-breath-and-pray department. You'd look at his telemetry traces and say to yourself, "How can that be possible? How can he do that?" In dry qualifying, he really opened my eyes on a few occasions. Michael was more consistent, more always there, every corner, every lap.

Besides, there's often very little actual time to be gained in the quick corners. It's in the slow turns - long second-or third-gear bends in which you spend a lot more time than you do in superfast fifth - or sixth-gear flicks, for example -that real time can be won. Both drivers have a truly fantastic ability to maintain apex minimum speed in apparently straightforward corners - to prevent the appearance of a V-shaped dip in the track-speed line on their telemetry traces, if you like.
With both of them, the apex deceleration is smoothed out - it's more of a U than a V - and I've rarely seen that. It only works out as a couple of miles per hour, but it's consistently there and it makes a significant cumulative difference.

So how is it achieved? Mika uses the pedals smoothly. He didn't always brake later than I did - in fact, I often braked later than Mika and I think David Coulthard does the same today - but Mika is very good at synchronising the application and release of throttle and brakes.

Michael is also strong in this area, but he likes to steer the car with the throttle a bit more than Mika does. He's not quite as fluid. The net result is remarkably similar: a higher apex minimum speed, and the ability to set the car up for that apex so that once power is applied, the car is straighter sooner - so it's ready to accelerate away from the corner earlier and faster.

Again, it's Mika who is slightly better here. He always seemed able to apply virtually full throttle very early and have less wheelspin than I was having with less throttle. I looked at it very carefully in '94, and I think the key was, is, - the couple of degrees of controlled sliding that he introduces to the car on the turn-in. If you're sideways, you're wasting time, but that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about arriving at a corner, dialling in a smidgen of attitude, and springboarding off that attitude rather than correcting it. Michael achieves something very similar by teasing the back end of the car with the throttle. And I'm talking about graph paper now -telemetry, computers, science, fact. Black and white. Those two guys can maintain forward motion more of the time than most others can.

And in slow corners -places like Club at Silverstone - it delivers real, tangible benefit. Although their slightly differing approaches achieve extremely similar results, Mika's technique is a little smoother - the result is, predictably, that Michael uses his tyres more heavily. Lately, that has helped him in qualifying. He can get hard tyres working hotter earlier than Mika can -but it can punish him during a race if tyre degradation is a factor.

Mika maximises the width of the track better than anybody else - but, again, Michael is very close. They 'widen' the track - ease the racing line - in different ways. Mika turns in from a very wide line - he isn't afraid to brake on the white lines that mark the track perimeter (except in the wet, of course, when to do so is suicidal). In fact, he uses the paint to induce the attitude I mentioned earlier. In fact, in qualifying Mika will sometimes even take to the grass on entry. Michael approaches corners from a narrower angle, but often uses more apex kerb than Mika does - especially in qualifying.

Overall, though, Mika is the better qualifier. At McLaren we used to talk about "ringing the three bells" - which meant getting all three lap sectors just right. Mika was brilliant at it, and he's even better now. He can build up to a truly spectacular qualifying run. Again, a Mika pole lap will be smooth, crisp and faultless -where a Michael equivalent will be a tad more ragged. He might overcook it in one corner and lose a tenth. It's still pole, but it isn't quite as perfect.

In terms of overtaking and lapping, they are both extremely good. I couldn't choose between the two. Michael has a small advantage in that his car is red. I really believe that. It just shows up in your mirrors in a way that a grey car never can. I'm thinking of Senna here: a Day-Glo yellow helmet sticking out of a Day-Glo orange Formula 1 car.

If the Senna-McLaren combo was 100% intimidation, then Schumacher-Ferrari is 95% and Hakkinen-McLaren 90%. If Michael has one significant chink in his armour, it's his starting. He isn't good at it. At Benetton Michael could outqualify me, but I'm sure he was usually looking in his mirrors at the start.

As a result he ran into a lot of people on lap one, trying to work out where I was going to be at the first corner. Mika is a magnificent starter. Starting is all about the head. OK, you need skill, balancing revs and clutch and throttle and so on,- but it's a pretty mechanical task, in truth.
The real problem is doing it under pressure - and the pressure, for the likes of Michael and Mika, is intense. Mika's starting is the barometer by which all others in F1 today should measure theirs whereas, for Michael, it's a constant cause of trouble. Not only does his mediocre performance in this area lose him places before the first corner but it also gets him into accidents.Too often he's moving backwards relative to cars behind him, which lead to first-corner shunts like those at Hockenheim and Austria last year. And that's why Mika is so hard to beat: because he's a fantastic qualifier and a fabulous starter, he's likely to be first into the first corner a very high proportion of the time. And that puts him in control from the beginning.

Even so, I think Michael will be an even tougher proposition in 2001. Now that the ghost of 1979 has been laid to rest, and Ferrari have got their elusive drivers' championship at last, I think he'll be a bit good. He may even step up a level. But the same could be true of Mika. - Michael certainly thinks so. He recently said he thought Mika would be strengthened by becoming a father, -the theory being that in times of stress a stable home life helps you get through. Mind you, Mika has always been very strong under pressure.

So, who is the better? I've got to stick my neck out, haven't I? You'd never forgive me if I signed off without giving one or other of them the nod. Let me put it this way. Of all the drivers I've raced against, the best was Senna. No question. In terms of the whole package, Michael runs him pretty close, with Mika a close third.

In terms of raw, God-given talent, Senna is still number one - but it's Mika, not Michael, who comes closest. If Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen were in the same Formula 1 team, with the same equipment, during qualifying, in the dry, and you asked me to stake my kids' building society accounts on who would bag the pole, I'd put my money on Mika.

But Michael would win the race.

There, I've said it.

Very interesting read. Hope you'd enjoy it as much as i have

outlook setting files location information

for backing up outlook, simply backing up the PST is not quite enough. you also need to back up the settings

the chances of corrupting outlook 2003's setting files seem to be much higher than the PST (i have crashed setting a few times already but yet to damage my PST. fingers crossed on that one...) . when the setting files are damaged you could loose your toolbar settings, your favorite folders setting etc. i found it really annoying

the files storing outlook settings are located here. back them up now!

just an idea, perhaps i should write a batch file, before opening up outlook, the batch file should copy all the settings first...

ok just had the batch file made and tested
cd D:\profile\chris\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
xcopy *.* D:\document\email\Outlook /W /H /Y
pause
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" /recycle

i wanted to change the batch file's icon to outlook's and noticed that you can't... you can't change batch file's icon directly (how stupid... perhaps for security reason?). however there are 2 ways to overcome this:
  • covert the batch file into an exe. you can use "batch to exe converter". this is freeware and is available here
  • if that's too much trouble, you could create a shortcut and change the shortcut's icon
by the way, you may noticed the switch /recycle. this is to open outlook again using existing instance. here is full list of all switches for outlook.exe (nothing looks that great to use)

a bit off topic, for backup i use acronis true image home to back up open files (i think this is called shadow copy) - that's right you do not need to close your excel and outlook and you can back up the open files. you can even back up your OS while you are running it. however i found backing up OS and window profiles often hangs acronis. best is to back up standard open files

outlook - individual column/field settings for each folder

i use outlook 2003 extensively and have quite a few folder (who doesn't...). most of the folders are used just for data filtering, but some are used for tracking and other purposes which requires different appearance (different appearance as having different columns/fields, and having each column/field with different width etc)

if you tried to adjust your inbox folder, say, having both "from" and "to" field while keeping your "customer" folder just have the "from" field (no "to" field), this may, under certain circumstances, not be possible. one instance i found that could screw up the setting is seaching all folders. anyway if you have tried it you'd know what i mean, if you never tried to do this you probably won't know what i am talking about ;)

the fix to above is here. you need to Win+R execute outlook.exe /cleanviews. by the way this won't work in command prompt because outlook.exe is not on one of the default path

once you cleared all the views, you are good to go to create new views :)

can't help wonder why, for something as simple as this, microsoft has to make it this complicate to get it done...

F1 2009 BBC feed download

sick of stupid local commentary? try watch the BBC feed with martin and others

torrent is from piratebay.org, downloadable via isohunt

the feed includes pre-qualifying/race analysis and update

this is how F1 should be watched...

video codec is x264 i think, picture quality is 8/10. if considering the file size, it's 10/10

by Kiroro

Look at where you stand. That is the path you walk on
Look straight ahead.
There lies your future

Mum has showered me with kindness
“Embrace the love and walk on”, repeat her always.
That time I was still very young, didn’t know what it meant.
She took the hand of the young and immature me, and walk together with me ’till now

Dreams are always as high up as the sky
Far from our reach and make us afraid, don’t they?
But I will keep on chasing after them.
Because this is my own story, so I don’t want to give it up
When I begin to feel insecure, Mum would take my hand and walk with me

There were times when I dislike her affection
Now that she’s no longer with me, I can’t tell her how I feel

Look at where you stand. That is the path you walk on
Look straight ahead. There lies your future

There were times when I dislike that affection
Now that she’s no longer with me, I can’t tell her how I feel

Look at where you stand. That is the path you walk on
Look straight ahead. There lies your future

Look at where you stand. That is the path you walk on
Look straight ahead. There lies your future

Face your future and slowly walk on
